Program Description:
Explore what it means to be a Global Citizen at City University London and the University of Utrecht! Programme Dates: Pre-arrival preparatory reading: 25 June – 7 July 2012 (all readings will be available to registered students on the course website) In-residence London/Utrecht: 8 July – 10 August 2012 Programme requires a total of seven weeks of academic work – with five of those weeks being in residence. The Global Citizenship Summer School is a seven week programme of study, five of which are spent in residence in London, England and Utrecht, the Netherlands. This course is open to students from universities all over the world and from all disciplines. The Global Citizenship Summer School is an innovative programme and provides an ideal opportunity for students to develop global perspectives and intercultural competencies that are an increasingly necessary prerequisite for success in the global market place. Through this programme students have the opportunity to work with a diverse cohort of students on a number of interdisciplinary projects, develop a broader understanding of contemporary issues of global significance, and explore the meanings of citizenship and civic engagement within the context of globalization. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a total of 12.5 ECTS points and transcripts from City University London and the University of Utrecht.

Students will spend the first half of the programme completing the London module. In this module they will explore a number of contemporary global issues, examine what it means to be a global citizen, and consider how globalisation and the nature of our contemporary world have changed the responsibilities of citizens. Following the London portion of the programme, students will travel to Utrecht where they will complete a second module that focuses on global citizenship from a specifically European perspective. In Utrecht students will consider what European integration and the EU can teach us about the possibilities of transnational forms of citizenship and identity. The curriculum in Utrecht will be based on an analysis of diverse forms of communication including new and digital media, museums, film and television. Excursions to various sites are included within the curriculum. These include: The Anne Frank House (Amsterdam) The Peace Palace (the Hague) The Imperial War Museum (London) The National Gallery (London)

Setting Description:

London, the capital of England, is a diverse global metropolis where you will experience a wealth of different cultures. Utrecht, is a traditional Dutch city with a vibrant university and a bustling student life.
Cost:
£3200. This includes course fees, housing in London and Utrecht, travel from London to Utrecht, and the costs of the excursions associate with the course. Students travel costs to and from their home countries are not included.
