Program Overview

Program Description:

This program will introduce students to that Celtic strain—in literature, culture, language, music, and geopolitics—that characterizes three different countries located inside what is now called the United Kingdom. By visiting and living in all three countries over a four-week period, students will get an opportunity to see, up-close and personal, some of the most stunning landscapes in Europe and to meet some of the most interesting people around—a people who love to celebrate their unique Celtic heritage in an assembly of words and music.

COURSES
English 138 - British Literature: 1945 to Present (4 units)
Prerequisite: course 3 or University Writing Program 1. Historically or thematically focused study of works of British literature (drama, poetry, prose fiction) from the period between 1945 and the present. May be repeated two times for credit when topic differs. Only 2 units of credit to students who have completed course 137. GE credit: Wrt.
AND
English 198 - Directed Group Study (4 units)P/NP grading only.
Prerequisite: English 3 or University Writing Program 1 or equivalent or consent of instructor.

All students enrolled in a Summer Abroad program (Davis and Non-Davis) will have the opportunity to apply for a Travel Award ($500 - $1,500.) Travel award deadline: March 5, 2013. Enrollment deadline is April 5, 2013.

Setting Description:
During the summer the weather in the UK is very difficult to predict and varies from region to region. It can get very warm but there are also occasional showers. It is highly recommended that you prepare for all types of weather; bring shorts, pants, and a sweater or light jacket; chances are you will need them all. Average temperatures for summer are low 50s -- high 60s.

Bring clothes that you can layer for ease of comfort. To prepare for rain showers, also bring a raincoat, poncho, or umbrella.
