Program Overview

Program Description:
Identified by the Indiana Department of Education as a model program, Manchester’s Master of Education degree is designed to meet the evolving needs of professional educators in today’s schools. In developing the master’s, Manchester asked area educators what kind of graduate degree would best serve their schools. The result is an intentionally flexible program designed to respond nimbly to issues confronting P-12 educators as they arise. The Manchester Master of Education degree will provide practical professional development and training, as well as the additional courses teachers want to enhance their licenses. Master’s candidates will develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of collaboration, knowledge of best practices, and the ability to effectively apply action research and assessment strategies. Manchester’s close relationship with the Educational Service Centers yields a highly relevant curriculum that reflects the needs of the schools in which our graduate students work. If there are teacher shortages in specific fields, Manchester can embed courses within its program to qualify teachers for those needed licenses. Seminar courses now offered through an Indiana Educational Service Center can be applied to a Manchester master’s degree. Our master’s program also allows a licensed teacher to earn an endorsement in high ability (gifted and talented). Additional licensure areas such as special education may also be offered. With a Master of Education degree from Manchester, teachers can enhance their licenses for greater marketability or flexibility within their own school districts. Also, master’s-level teachers may enjoy a higher pay structure than their colleagues without a master’s degree. And a master’s degree enables teachers to “professionalize” their licenses, requiring renewal every 10 years, rather than five. The Manchester program is convenient, too. Most of the course work will be online or independent study, which helps working teachers manage their time. Only a few classes will be face-to-face with faculty in the classroom, and they will be offered at night. Learn more at www.manchester.edu.
