Program Description:

The field of photojournalism is in the midst of a fundamental transformation, as conventional print media converges with digitally derived new media. Photographers trained in traditional photojournalism now must learn new technology for producing picture stories--discovering new outlets for their increasingly sophisticated content. In this environment, more than ever before, creativity is the name of the game. The Master of Arts in New Media Photojournalism is the first program of its kind, poised to help visual journalists study and address the challenges facing photojournalism today. The program draws on a vibrant community of media outlets and renowned photojournalists who make Washington their home. The latest digital practices are taught in conjunction with the fundamentals of visual reporting, editing, and ethics. The program emphasizes the individual as a visual reporter and encourages experimentation with new ways of story-telling, documentation, and editing. Graduates of the program are fully equipped to lead a new generation of 21st-century photojournalists. The curriculum draws on the College's excellent academic and fine art offerings, as well as extending the established strengths of the renowned undergraduate Photojournalism program. The College's partner, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, houses and extensive photography collection. Along with other archives in the city, the Gallery provides a rich opportunity to explore the history and practice of documentary photography and photojournalism. Through intensive faculty mentoring and a strong internship program, students choose and develop their professional paths. This is a two-year, 48-credit program that can be completed in three semesters of full-time traditional study and one semester of intensive project completion. Part-time study is available for those balancing careers and other demands with coursework. To become leaders in visual journalism, student develop proficiency in generating and editing compelling still photographs, audio, and video; multimedia production and post-production; basic web design; and a solid understanding of the best practices and ethical guidelines in photojournalism today.
