- The Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science is home to world class researchers who investigate diverse aspects of physical activity, movement, fitness and human health. Graduate student training involves advanced coursework and an emphasis on independent research. Our program is committed to excellence in research and teaching. Several faculty members are recipients of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award, recognizing their ongoing contributions to graduate education. The Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science has three areas of focus: Integrative Physiology of Exercise; Neuroscience and Biomechanics; Fitness and Health Behaviours. Researchers within these areas employ a spectrum of approaches ranging from genetic and cellular biology to individual function and population science to the impact of society on the determinants of health. Graduate studies in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University is committed to excellence in research and teaching. Our graduate students are encouraged to develop collaborative research skills. Numerous collaborative and multi-disciplinary research opportunities are available to further enrich the training environment. Many of our faculty and graduate students are affiliated with one of several research networks at York, including the Muscle Health Research Centre; Centre for Vision Research and York Institute for Health Research. Some faculty members hold affiliations with regional hospitals, including York Central Hospital; Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Centre and the University Health Network. The Masters of Fitness Science (MFSc) degree (non-thesis) involves coursework and an extensive practical experience to prepare students for a variety of professional careers including health promotion, sport and occupational fitness applications and exercise management for persons with chronic diseases or disabilities. A study practicum involves laboratory and field work with the expectation that the candidate will author a fitness-based article for a professional publication. In completing this degree, students satisfy the requirements for the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's Certified Exercise Physiologist.
