- Program Description:
- This degree is especially attractive to those wishing to prepare themselves for careers as professional economists in the private or public sectors. Graduates may pursue careers specializing in economic forecasting, economic policy analysis, industry and market studies, financial markets and institutions, strategic planning and public policy. Graduates of the program are qualified to pursue doctoral studies. A major strength of the program is that it combines a specific focus on business economics with training in economic theory, quantitative methods and applied research Noteworthy features of the curriculum includes its focus on the preparation, conduct and presentation of empirical research as well as written and oral communication of economics. The development and practice of presentation skills are also emphasized. The program without the co-operative education component is 12 months (3 consecutive terms) in length. Some students apply and are accepted to the co-operative education stream of the program. Two terms of classes are followed by either a 4-month or 8-month work term. The length of the work experience depends on student preferences and the availability of suitable employment. A student returns after the work period for the final term of the program on campus. Students are permitted to enroll in up to three MBA courses as electives within the program. This encourages and fosters interdisciplinary teaching and research and greatly enhances the readiness of our students for careers as professional economists. Our graduates have earned employment in a wide variety of private and public sector enterprises, including financial institutions, consulting firms, investment firms and government departments.
- Requirements:
- Applicants are expected to have an equivalent to an honours degree in economics (an honours graduate in a program other than economics or general degree graduates may be admitted if evidence justifying admission is offered). Applicants are expected to have completed at least one one-term undergraduate course in each of calculus, econometrics (focusing on regression analysis), as well as two one-term courses in each of intermediate microeconomic theory and intermediate macroeconomic theory.

- Applicants whose language of instruction during the undergraduate degree was other than English must furnish evidence of proficiency in English prior to admission. Normally, this evidence is an acceptable score on one of the following: TOEFL, IELTS, CAEL Assessment.
