Many of the medical challenges of the 21st century lie in the area of the natural sciences. In medical research, there is a growing emphasis on advanced chemical, physical and mathematical technology, as well as on computer science. This is true of both fundamental scientific research in medicine and its clinical applications. More and more medical research is being conducted within the basic disciplines of the natural sciences. Advanced diagnostic tools and complex modern medical instruments are the product of specific chemical and physical knowledge and expertise. Society has a growing need for academics who have the ability to function in an interdisciplinary environment that includes both the medical and the natural sciences.
