- Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to integrate the principles of medicine and biology with those of engineering. It applies the methods of engineering, the physical sciences and mathematics to the solution of problems in the clinical and life sciences, and uses the principles and techniques of the life sciences in engineering. The Biomedical Engineering program, established in 2001 builds on the 50-year research history and the more than 40-year academic history of the field of biomedical engineering at the University of Toronto.
