- The Online MEd in Educational Technology offered by the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) is a 36-credit program designed to prepare persons in K-12, higher education, corporate, and military settings to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for the classrooms of tomorrow. Graduates of this program will have a much better understanding of the uses of technology and how they can be applied in instructional/training settings. The program focuses on the theory, research and applications related to the field of educational technology and is intended to help individuals; use instructional technology (computers, telecommunications and related technologies) as resources for the delivery of instruction; serve as facilitators or directors of instructional technology in educational settings and/or be developers of instructional programs and materials for new technologies; and design instructional materials in a variety of media. In addition to earning an MEd in Educational Technology, students working in K-12 environments also have the opportunity to complete the Master Technology Teacher (MTT) program and test for the MTT Certificate. The program requires completion of four MTT elective courses offered as an option in the degree program. An E-Learning Certificate is also available for individuals working in higher education or e-learning industries. *Note: The GRE is no longer a requirement for admission to this program. DEGREE PLAN To earn a Master of Education in Educational Technology from UTB, students must complete 36 credits according to the following degree plan: Curriculum and Instruction: 6 credits EDCI 6300 Foundations of Research in Education EDCI 6304 Learning and Cognition Educational Technology: 18 credits EDTC 6320 Instructional Technology EDTC 6321 Instructional Design EDTC 6323 Multimedia/Hypermedia EDTC 6325 Educational Telecommunications EDTC 6329 Selected Topics in Educational Technology EDTC 6332 Practicum in Educational Technology Electives: 12 credits Students will select 12 credits of electives based upon their professional needs and academic interests (e.g., 12 credits in a specific content area such as reading, mathematics, science) or desire to earn the Master Technology Teacher (MTT) or E-Learning Certificate. For further information, contact an academic advisor. Students selecting the thesis option will take EDCI 7300 and EDCI 7301 in lieu of six credits of coursework with approval of the graduate advisor. Students must complete the 24-credit core courses plus 12 credits of electives. With Faculty Advisor approval, students can customize their Program of Study to meet their specific needs. We offer the following options: Traditional This program of study allows students to select 12 credits of electives in a specific content area such as educational technology, reading, mathematics, or science. E-Learning Certificate This program of study allows students interested in teaching online in higher education or at e-learning industries the opportunity to earn an E-Learning Certificate. Master Technology Teacher Certificate This program of study offers candidates the opportunity to earn the Master Technology Teacher (MTT) Certification. E-Learning/Master Technology Teacher Certificates This program of study allows you to earn the E-Learning and Master Technology Teacher (MTT) Certifications without having to take additional coursework beyond the 36 credits. Thesis This program of study is for students who are interested in research or intend to pursue a doctoral degree in the future.
