- Program Description:
- The Department of Philosophy offers programs of study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The University was authorized to award a Ph.D. in Philosophy in July 1994, and the department admitted students in the fall of 1995. Both programs provide a foundation in logic and thehistory of philosophy for all students. Students may specialize in a broad diversityof areas, which fall into three general areas of strength in the department.
- The History of Philosophy- including ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy,rationalism, empiricism, German Idealism, 19th- and 20th- century philosophy,American philosophy and history of ethics.
- The History and Philosophy of Science- including foundations of probability and statistics, medieval and modern history of science, foundations of physics, and the role of instrumentation in science.
- Normative and Interpretive Philosophy - including aesthetics, ethics, environmental philosophy, contemporary continental philosophy, philosophy of religion, hermeneutics and deconstruction, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and action theory.
