The Department of Economics at the University of Sheffield has an international reputation for practical and real world economics.

We are a leading research University and economics department. You will be taught by some of the top economic experts in their field, receiving the latest cutting-edge teaching from people that care passionately about their subject.

Our research influences and informs real economic policy. We advise government departments in the UK and internationally and global organisations including the European Union, the World Bank and OECD.

This all happens in our recently refurbished building that provides state-of-art facilities in the heart of the University of Sheffield’s campus.

Our flagship taught postgraduate course, the MSc Economics trains you for a career as a professional economist advancing your analytical skills and allowing you to specialize in your chosen area of economics or finance.

Our graduates go into economist roles in a wide range of sectors such as; financial services and insurance, others work in the public sector in government departments in the UK and overseas. Some graduates continue their studies as PhD students, and go on to work in academia or in research.

The core modules of MSc Economics provide you with advanced skills in macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis and econometrics. The optional modules offer flexibility, allowing you to tailor the degree to your own needs and interests.

Content and structure

Study MSc Economics and you'll need to take and pass eight taught modules over two semesters, four in each. These are examined at the end of each semester.

Your core modules in the first semester are Microeconomic Analysis, Macroeconomic Analysis, and Econometric Methods. You choose one additional module from Modern Theory of Banking and Finance, Health Economics, and Modern Finance.

In semester 2 you choose one core module from Applied Microeconometrics or Applied Macroeconometrics. Your three optional modules are selected from Development Finance, Asset Pricing, International Money and Finance, Industrial Organization, Monetary Economics, International Trade and Public Economics, and the other core module.

After you've completed the second semester's taught modules, there is a 10-week period to write your dissertation. We'll support you through dissertation workshops and input from your supervisory team. To be awarded the MSc Economics you will have to pass the examinations and complete the dissertation to the required standard.

Requirements:
Holders of a good undergraduate four-year bachelor degree and high grades in relevant individual subjects from an accredited university or college in the USA will be considered for direct admission. We will typically look for a GPA of 3.0/4.0.
International Requirements:
IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6 in each part), or TOEFL 100 (iBT), or equivalent.
