Program Description:

Music Psychology uses psychological methods and theory to interpret and understand musical behaviours, sounds and ideas. The interdisciplinarity of the subject, and its use of a wide range of empirical approaches, offers a unique perspective on music.Our on-site program introduces you to a wide range of areas including auditory perception, music cognition, musical development, music in everyday life, and musical performance. The flexible structure allows you to focus on either the relationship between Language and Music or Cognitive Neuroscience of Music. You can then specialize within a particular area through your written dissertation, and the pursuit of original research, which generally includes an experimental or observational empirical investigation.

Throughout the program you will learn qualitative as well as quantitative research methodologies giving you the skills you will need should you choose to continue into doctoral research.

Our staff are recognised for their world-leading research and the department is home to internationally leading research centres including: Music Mind Machine, Sheffield Performer & Audience Research Centre, and Music and Wellbeing.

Facilities within the department include dedicated research rooms with a MIDI keyboard and drums, and equipment for measurements of physiological responses and reaction times.

Our vibrant postgraduate community, which includes many international students, works collaboratively to develop a diverse and well-rounded knowledge and skill set. The department plays an important role in Sheffield's thriving cultural life, promoting over 60 concerts a year as well as productions of operas and revived musicals. There is a wide range of opportunities to get involved in music-making both within the department and in and around Sheffield.
