Program Overview

Program Description:

This general course explores key ideas in philosophy. The course is highly flexible allowing you to tailor your program to suit your individual ambitions. If you are a graduate with some knowledge of philosophy this program will enable you to further develop your philosophical knowledge and understanding to a higher level. If you a strong student wishing to transfer into philosophy from another subject this program will help you explore selected topics.

Our academics are active researchers and we have expertise in all the main traditional areas of philosophy, as well as in more recent areas such as feminism and the philosophy of film. You choose from a range of modules which allow you to specialize and gain a more in depth understanding of philosophy and can also gain valuable research and project management skills that will be highly beneficial in your future career.

If you are planning to go on to PhD study, we will work with you to develop a clearly focused topic, and provide you with the knowledge, understanding, and skills you will need to undertake high quality philosophical research.

In addition to your chosen modules, we hold seminars where you can engage with other students’ work and present your own. You can also attend the departmental seminar series where you can listen to and question invited speakers.

The department has a vibrant postgraduate community and an active International Philosophy Student Society. Each year there are at least 10 reading groups on a wide variety of topics, in which graduate students participate along with staff, an annual Reading Weekend and our postgraduate students also organize the Understanding Value conference each year.
