Program Overview

Program Description:

This is a one-year full time course that enables students to specialise in particular topics of interest to them within the fields of landscape design and landscape science through the research and writing of a substantive dissertation. As well as providing the candidate with a Master's level degree in landscape studies, students will also graduate from the course with a fully written and researched research proposal which can then form the basis of a subsequent PhD.

Increasingly, PhD studies require that the applicant has undertaken Master's level research training. This one-year course may be taken as a free-standing qualification by graduates who are particularly interested in a research career in Landscape or, more commonly, by students intending to proceed to a PhD sponsored by the ESRC or AHRC, either at the University of Sheffield, or at another institution. The course gives an all-round introduction to qualitative and quantitative research techniques.

The Course is taught jointly with the Department of Town and Regional Planning, and for many modules you will be alongside students on the MA in Planning Research and Theory. If you are intending to proceed to the degree of PhD, your choice of option modules should be agreed with your Supervisors, and should be related to your intended research topic. Equally, the focus of your Dissertation will be closely linked to your eventual thesis topic.
