Program Description:

Training in advanced interdisciplinary research practice forms the core of this programme. Students are introduced to the theoretical underpinnings of research at the interface of English language and literature and have the opportunity to develop their own research skills in a core interdisciplinary research methods module. Students are able to follow further modules covering a diverse range of literary-linguistic subjects, which reflect the research and teaching specialisms of the Language and Literature team. Key areas of interdisciplinary English studies offered on the programme include stylistics, narrativity, historical stylistics, corpus stylistics, cognitive poetics, postcolonial language and literatures, and the history of literary and linguistic thought. This breadth of coverage is further enhanced by contributions to the programme's core teaching made by colleagues from other research clusters within the School of English. Students are also encouraged to explore their own specialist interests in complementary areas of either linguistic or literary study. They have the opportunity to select from the wide range of Masters modules available in the School of English on specific topics in applied linguistics, historical language studies, sociolinguistics, cultural tradition, and English and American literature.

Students of the MA in English Language and Literature are uniquely positioned to be able to enjoy the full range of diverse approaches to linguistic and literary study represented within the School of English while continuing to develop the inquisitive skills necessary to synthesise their knowledge into rigorous and productive interdisciplinary research.

There are a number of studentships and fee bursaries available, funded by either the University or the Arts and Humanities Research Council.  Deadlines for funding applications are usually in early spring.

We are pleased to offer the Sheffield Scholarship 2016 to all US students commencing a Taught Masters programme in September 2016. The scholarships are: • £2,000 if your tuition fees are between £14,500 and £16,500 • £2,500 for each student paying fees of £16,501 and upwards We also offer scholarships of 50% of the course fee which will be offered on the basis of academic merit.

IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6 in each part), or TOEFL 630 with TWE 5 (paper based) or TOEFL 267, TWE 5 (computer based) or equivalent. The TOEFL IBT test score has to be 113 or above.
