Program Description:

This programme is designed for recent graduates who want to acquire specialist knowledge before starting their careers and for academics, international lawyers, and those working in the field of international law who want to complement their work with further study.

The programme will be of interest to legal practitioners, legal academics, those in business and those people in the public sector who encounter various aspects of international law. International legal studies is defined broadly to include European, commercial, transnational, comparative and international legal concepts and issues. Subjects included in the degree focus on areas of law that do not simply stop at national frontiers. The result is a rich variety of modules from which you can choose ones to suit your background and experience.

The degree programme draws on the considerable expertise of the staff in the School's research cluster for Law in its International Context, and provides graduates with a range of transferable skills and knowledge. Students are encouraged to become involved with the activities of the research cluster, which undertakes research projects and holds conferences and regular research seminars given by visiting experts from the UK and abroad.

The degree is structured so that you can take different pathways enabling you to specialise, for example in public international law, international commercial law or European law, or to take a more general degree suited to your background and requirements. The degree is based on a structured First Semester, which will provide you with the essential international legal principles, and fundamental research skills required for further study. You will then broaden your substantive knowledge through studying a range of options in Semester Two. You will also develop your research skills and in-depth understanding through preparing a dissertation on a specific area under the supervision of an expert member of staff. Not all LLM programmes stipulate a dissertation, but at Sheffield we feel it's a vitally important part of any Master's programme. It builds on the Research Methods module you study in the first semester, and enables you to develop in-depth expertise in an area of substantive international law. We think that when you´ve successfully completed your dissertation and your degree you'll feel the benefits, and appreciate that the extra effort was more than worthwhile.

We are pleased to offer the Sheffield Scholarship 2016 to all US students commencing a Taught Masters programme in September 2016. The scholarships are: • £2,000 if your tuition fees are between £14,500 and £16,500 • £2,500 for each student paying fees of £16,501 and upwards We also offer scholarships of 50% of the course fee which will be offered on the basis of academic merit.
