Program Description:

Medicine is a global industry, with national standards influenced by European institutions and policies. In response, the University of Sheffield has developed an innovative approach to the study of medical and healthcare law, which reflects the diverse range of legal disciplines that interface in regulating medicine. This programme provides an understanding of medical law which, in addition to covering medical practice and clinical negligence, covers a wide range of health-related issues in EU health law, human rights, pharmaceutical law, data protection, innovation law, philosophy and ethics, jurisprudence, resourcing and public law. The modules present a contemporary view of medicine, from standard medical practice to new medical technologies. Students on the programme benefit from cross-faculty collaboration: this School of Law programme offers access to additional modules delivered by the School of Health and Related Research. In addition, the broad range of study options allows students to steer their learning experience in the direction that interests them most, and the dissertation at the end of the programme provides an ideal opportunity to demonstrate specialist knowledge under the guidance of an expert in the field.

Whether you are studying or working in law, medicine, the pharmaceutical sector, or biomedicine and want to tailor your qualifications to a specialised range of health-related fields, move into new career areas, or are simply looking to enhance your existing promotion prospects, this programme offers the opportunity to do so by gaining legal expertise in European Health Law & Policy. The range of careers available will vary dependent upon the specialist background of applicants, but generally graduates of the programme will have career options: in industry within pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical supplies companies; with health providers and health regulators in the UK, EU or internationally; with NGOs (eg. EPHA, Parenteral Drug Assoc (PDA), or ABPI); with patient interest groups (eg. PatientView, EACH); or with intellectual property organisations (eg. EPO or WIPO). Graduates with Qualifying Law Degrees will additionally have recourse to legal practice in medical/clinical negligence and/or PI. Non-law graduates who wish to enter legal practice may be interested in Sheffield School of Law’s one-year GDL or two-year MA(Law) programmes, either of which provide equivalence to a Qualifying Law Degree.

The programme offers a good system of pastoral support, and we are in the process of organising prizes for outstanding performances in module assessments, as well as approaching our contacts to provide work experience during the summer (while students are doing their dissertations). We are keen that students emerging from this programme are not just adding to their qualifications, but enhancing their CVs, increasing their network of contacts, and being put in the best position to make informed choices about where they wish their careers to develop when they leave us.

We are pleased to offer the Sheffield Scholarship 2016 to all US students commencing a Taught Masters programme in September 2016. The scholarships are: • £2,000 if your tuition fees are between £14,500 and £16,500 • £2,500 for each student paying fees of £16,501 and upwards We also offer scholarships of 50% of the course fee which will be offered on the basis of academic merit.

For Medicine students: scores of 4 (or equivalent) in studies up to Phase 3a/3b in the MBCHB, or a 2:1 BMed Sci degree; for Science students: 2:1 (or equivalent) degree in Biomedicine or other relevant science subject; for Law students: 2:1 LLB (Hons) Law degree. Other cognate degrees will be considered on an individual basis.
