Program Description:

The mission of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Montevallo is to educate professionals in the disciplines of Speech-Language Pathology and to provide services to individuals with communication disorders. The department complies with federal, state, and UM policies and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, marital status, or veteran status. The department also compiles with the American-Speech-Language and Hearing Association's position statement and does not discriminate against students and professionals who speak English with accents and non-standard dialects in the provision of speech, language, and hearing services. The program offers faculty with active research agendas in: Autism spectrum disorders, aphasia, emerging literacy, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, fluency disorders, and reading and auditory processing disorders The program offers the following professional and community opportunities: participation and affiliation with Metro Sertoma Club, participation in Run for Research fundraiser, participation in "Best Buddies International" alongside United Cerebral Palsy, participation in the annual on-campus symposium with nationally-known speakers, participation in NSSLHA Community Service Projects, and participation in the annual Speech and Hearing (SHAA) convention Courses are innovative and meet ASHA's most current scope of practice. Students learn the latest acoustic analysis techniques in class and apply those skills with clients in the clinic's state-of-the-art speech science laboratory. The Dysphagia course prepares students to meet the needs of their acute care patients in their medical externships. Students are able to apply non-biased assessment measures to their culturally and linguistically diverse students in school settings as a result of the CLD Assessment course. The opportunity to work with a faculty member in group literacy teams in the schools is exciting and fulfilling and an extension of the course in Language and Literacy. Collaborations with the on-campus preschool provide students the opportunity to carry out their knowledge from the Language Development: Birth to Five course. The success of the CSD Deparment's mission is shown in the fact that 100% of our graduate students are employed and providing quality speech, language, and swallowing services to infants, children, and adults across the state and country. Patients report a high satisfaction from the services provided by graduates of the CSD graduate program at the University of Montevallo. UM's well-trained graduates improve the quality of life for their patients.

The graduate program in Communication Science and Disorders is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech- Language-Hearing Association.

Requirements:

Admission to graduate studies in SLP at the University of Montevallo is highly competitive. The University offers a five semester program for students with a background in speech language pathology. Non-background students may apply for the three-year graduate program. A thesis option is available that includes an additional six thesis credit hours.
