Program Overview

Program Description:
Those who complete the University of Montevallo counseling program are awarded the Master in Education degree in counseling. The program prepares students to perform as professional counselors in a wide variety of settings. The program includes an internship and a practicum experience arranged at participating counseling locations, and a comprehensive examination is taken near the end of the program. Successful completion of the Master of Education degree in counseling fulfills academic requirements for National Counselor Certification for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Alabama. All department faculty are doctoral-level counselor educators and are actively involved in research and in the provision of professional services. They also serve as leaders in the counseling field at state, regional, and national levels. The program faculty have expertise in crisis intervention, and program coursework emphasizes crisis management skills. Students graduating from the program are well prepared to provide crisis services in all work settings.

The University of Montevallo's Clinical and Mental Health Counseling program is currently accredited through March 2020 under the new CACREP standards
Requirements:
To be admitted to the counseling program, applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (4.0 scale) on all attempted undergraduate work or 2.75 (4.0 scale) on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work, and satisfactory scores on either the MAT or GRE. Each applicant also must have submitted a satisfactory essay describing long-range professional goals in the counseling field, and participated in a personal interview with the counseling faculty. In addition to necessary application forms and fees, the application process requires formal transcripts from each institution of higher education attended.
