You’ve always wondered whether you would make a good teacher. You’re dedicated, caring, resilient, and committed to lifelong learning. Working with adolescents intrigues you. You are concerned about the compelling realities facing students in today's urban schools and wonder how you might be part of the solution. The University of Michigan-Flint’s Master of Arts with Secondary Certification (MAC) program wants you. The Detroit Teacher Project (MAC), is for aspiring teachers who have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and are interested in earning a master's degree with teacher certification. This full-time program is taught on-site in eight Detroit-area high schools with experiences in those high schools throughout the two-year program. Graduates of the program receive their master’s degree and are eligible for teacher certification in Michigan. FOCUS: - UM-Flint’s Master of Arts with Secondary Teacher Certification (MAC) is an innovative, clinically-based program designed to prepare you for a career encountering the unique challenges and rewards of teaching in the small urban high school environment. - The cohort design provides a support structure of peers. - Its focus is on experience-based learning is intended to explicitly link theory with practice through immersion in the urban high school setting. - You will begin the program by working alongside experienced teachers, while gradually increasing your opportunity and responsibility for teaching in the high school classroom. FLEXIBILITY: - The robust emphasis on field experience is coupled with seminars offered in a mixed-mode format (both online and face-to-face). - Field experiences, 10-12 hours per week, are arranged by you and your coaching teacher. - The full-time program is completed in two years. RESOURCES: - The program is taught on-site, within small, urban high schools in Detroit where you will be immersed with expert university and high school faculty who facilitate and support your growing expertise in teaching. - The field-based setting is invaluable in building a sense of community with your instructors, cohort peers, coaching teachers, and students. - The traditional program is completed in two years and the alternate route is completed in one year. RESULTS: - You will be highly prepared to teach and will acquire skills tailored for success in helping urban students achieve despite challenges they may face. - The need for secondary teachers prepared to teach in the small urban high school, particularly in Detroit, is compelling. The Detroit Teacher Project is your route to a life-changing experience and satisfying career. - Michigan Future, Inc. has been given money to start up seven additional new high schools and looks to open 35 more schools by 2018 (Detroit Free Press, March, 6, 2010). - You will have a distinct advantage in finding long-term employment within a growing network of small urban high schools.
