Program Description:
The Department of Pathology offers two programs leading to a Master of Science degree. Honours Science graduates with a strong background in biology can carry out coursework plus either a: Research Based Program and thesis (requires an agreement with a supervisor) All students in this program are required to take a minimum of 12 credit hours of 700 level courses, to carry out a supervised research project, and to present an acceptable thesis. Practicum leading to a paramedical qualification as a Pathologist’s Assistant Pathologist’s Assistant is a two-year program that trains paramedical personnel to function as a Pathologist’s Assistant in a clinical setting. An agreement with a supervisor for the Practicum-based program is not necessary. Students in the Research-based program can study with leading experts in the fields of experimental neuropathology, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), enigmatic skin diseases, the identification of breast cancer biomarkers, and breast cancer progression. Graduate students also have the opportunity to work and interact with clinicians and clinician/scientists in a teaching hospital environment. Students graduating from the Practicum-based program become highly-trained and skilled clinical laboratory assistants. Previous graduates have found employment in laboratories in Manitoba and across Canada.

Applicants require a B.Sc. Honours with a minimum GPA of 3.0. For the research-based program, it is the prospective student's responsibility to contact and secure a supervisor prior to making an application to Graduate Studies and/or for scholarships in the Department of Pathology.
