Program Description:

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) at the University of Manitoba was established in 1968 as a degree-granting, interdisciplinary unit with a threefold purpose: to provide graduate education in the area of natural resources and environmental management; to conduct useful research on actual resource and environmental problems; and to provide a forum for examining problems in resource use and environmental management. The NRI offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Natural Resources Management (Interdisciplinary); and Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. Research interests focus on four areas of natural resources and environmental management: Common property resources Participatory management for environmental sustainability Conservation of biodiversity Social learning in environmental governance The Institute plays a distinctive role at the University through its interdisciplinary activities and its participation in networks dealing with natural resource and environmental issues in Manitoba, Canada, and internationally. It is the only academic unit in Manitoba conducting graduate teaching and research specific to natural resources and environmental management, and has contributed to the training of more than 800 academics, professionals, administrators, and practitioners now active in the natural resources and environment fields in Manitoba and throughout the world. The Institute is distinctive because of its close linkages with resource and environmental management professionals in government and private sectors. Graduate students are exposed to the concepts, theories, realities and practice of natural resources and environmental management, and are provided access to expertise within and outside the university.

The program is open to those holding necessary qualifications recognized by the University of Manitoba, and who can meet the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Experience in the resource management or environmental field is desirable. Students are encouraged to discuss their interests with any faculty member.
