Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The graduate program provides a research-intensive experience and imparts critical thinking skills suitable for research careers in biomedical science, industrial research or clinical research. Due to the interdisciplinary character of modern immunology and the varied background of students entering this area from different biological science disciplines, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs include a mandatory Immunobiology course that provides all students a strong basis in immunology. Beyond this, students have flexibility in choosing their courses and are encouraged to develop an individualized research-focused program. Students hone their presentation skills in journal club and seminar programs and participate in additional professional development activities. The research of the over 20 Faculty members who participate in the Immunology program is strongly supported by peer-reviewed external funding from international, national and local sources. Utilizing molecular, cellular and in vivo approaches in animal models and humans, Immunology researchers have as their main interests: Allergy and asthma Autoimmunity, including arthritis and colitis Cancers of the immune system, including leukemia and lymphoma Gene therapy of immune cells Immune regulation and immune memory Transplantation immunology Leukocyte cell biology and signal transduction Leukocyte receptors and adhesion molecules Neuroendocrine Immunology Stem cell biology Systems Biology and Proteomics Immune response to viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases The Immunology graduate program is based in the Faculty of Medicine. The program offers outstanding modern facilities and instrumentation for research in contemporary immunology. Strong scientific links exist with the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology, Genetic Models Centre, National Microbiology Laboratory, the Health Sciences Centre and Children’s Hospital, and Canadian Blood Services, all in Winnipeg.
