Program Description:
Master of Science and Ph.D. programs are offered in Geology and in Geophysics. Each program requires completion of a minimum of 12 credit hours of approved courses, completion of GEOL 7760 Geological Sciences Graduate Seminar and a research project and thesis. More than 100 years old, the Department of Geological Sciences is western Canada's oldest geoscience department. Located near the boundary between the metal-rich Precambrian Shield and the petroleum-producing Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, and adjacent to the Lake Winnipeg watershed, the department is ideally situated for field research, with Archean to Quaternary aged rocks recording three billion years of geologic history. Recognized worldwide as one of Canada's top geoscience units, we are a dynamic and diverse group interested in a wide variety of research topics, including: Mineralogy and crystallography Environmental mineralogy and geochemistry Sedimentology and quaternary studies Invertebrate paleontology Crustal and mantle geophysics Applied/environmental geophysics Petrology and tectonics Mineral deposits Arctic, marine, and freshwater systems The department also features: Outstanding researchers Extensive analytical laboratories with state of the art equipment – all conveniently located in one building Highly skilled technical staff supervise research facilities and train graduate students in analytical procedures and proficient use of advanced instrumentation Expanding northern Canada and Arctic field programs

Requirements:
M.Sc. applicants should have the equivalent of a B.Sc. Honours in Geology or Geophysics or a related Honours degree in Geography, Soil Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Civil, Geological or Electrical Engineering. Ph.D. applicants must hold a minimum M.Sc. degree in a related field. See the Department website for full admission requirements.
