Program Overview

Program Description:
The English program offers graduate courses over a wide range of periods, genres, and critical approaches, and it also gives M.A. students the option of doing a creative writing thesis. Students are welcome to consider all areas of literary specialization: Canadian literature, American literature, prairie literature, 20th-century literature, 19th-century literature, 18th-century literature, Milton, medieval literature, film, drama, theatre, post-colonial literature and theory, modern and post-modern literature, literary and critical theory, cultural and media studies, women's writing, and creative writing. One of the major strengths of the faculty is its commitment to teaching excellence, with three of its current members having been honoured with the University’s highest teaching award, and several others having been honoured with Merit Awards, Graduate Teaching Awards, and UMSU Certificates of Teaching Excellence. In keeping with this record, graduate student teachers have also won a number of the Teaching Excellence Awards offered by the Faculty of Arts since 1994.

Requirements:
M.A. - Honours B.A. in English, or its equivalent. Ph.D. - Applicants must present evidence of superior capacity and accomplishment in the field. A Master's in English is a normal requirement for admission. Students applying to the Ph.D. program must have maintained at least a 3.5 average in their work at the M.A. level. Pre-M.A. - Students who wish to undertake graduate study in English but lack the prerequisite may apply to enter the Pre-M.A. program, which is designed to allow such students to attain the equivalent of an Honours B.A. in English.
