Program Description:
The Department of Anthropology offers graduate programs at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels in sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology and archaeology. Maintaining a strong focus on research training, attempts are made to tailor programs to the interests and strengths of individual students in close cooperation with faculty advisors. Abundant research opportunities within the Province of Manitoba are supported by the presence of a wide variety of ethnic groups and a rich record of ancient human settlement. The Department of Anthropology’s vision focuses on innovation, excellence and renewal in all of its major sub-fields. Graduates have been highly successful in a variety of fields, taking positions in: Universities and colleges as professors or specialists Foreign Service Health related institutions Museums Education Government heritage positions International Development Research Centre Counseling for Native municipal boards Others have chosen to be freelance anthropologists; some have incorporated their own successful companies.

Requirements:
Applications to the Ph.D. program are, in addition, judged on the basis of demonstrated research competence at the M.A. level. The Pre-Masters program is normally reserved for students with an academic background other than anthropology. Anthropology students who do not have a four-year (Advanced B.A.) undergraduate degree or who lack a sufficient grade point average in their undergraduate degree are recommended to seek advice from the department on how to use the SS (Special Student) category to upgrade their qualifications.
