Program Overview

Program Description:
Graduate classes are small, with enrollments ranging from five to twenty students, and students enjoy ready access to faculty. Graduate Program Master of Arts in Teaching The M.A.T. prepares students for secondary teaching and for some junior college positions. We offer this degree on-campus and by distance-learning. To read about it click on the M.A.T. site. Master of Science The M.S. degree prepares you to enter a Ph.D. program, to teach at some colleges, and for many positions in business and industry. Read about the research programs described in the discussion of our Ph.D. programs to discover the opportunities we offer to learn special mathematical skills that can qualify you for interesting work in scientific and industrial enterprises. Most people can complete our non-thesis M.S. program in two years. Doctor of Philosophy The Ph.D. is generally required for teaching and research at the university level. We specialize in producing graduates with broad training in the common knowledge of mathematics traditionally shared by all Ph.D. mathematicians and who are capable of continuing a program of original research. Our programs in probability and in differential equations offer the opportunity of including applications, especially in mathematical biology. Our program in combinatorics can include applications to computer science and engineering. Advanced courses offered in: •Algebra •Algebraic Geometry •Number Theory •Combinatorics •Graph Theory •Real and Complex Analysis •Functional Analysis •Probability •Stochastic Models •Topology •Differentiable Manifolds •Mathematical Genetics •Mathematical Biology •Cryptography •Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations The University of Idaho has strong departments of biology, computer science, and several engineering disciplines that complement our mathematics programs to afford good opportunity for training leading to positions in scientific and industrial enterprises. Several of our faculty and graduate students participate in the University's interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. MAT available via distance learning.
