- The six-year course of study in Medicine leads to the cand. med. et chir. degree, which, with the addition of one year's clinical training and a licence from the Minister of Health, qualifies the holder to practice medicine in Iceland. After finishing the first three (pre-clinical) years of the medical programme, students may devote one year to supervised research, upon the completion of which they graduate with a B.S. degree in Medicine. A two-year Master's program (Biomedical Sciences) is offered at the Medical Faculty. A competitive examination is held in December at the end of the first term and the 30 students with the highest marks are allowed to continue in the medical program. All students regardless of nationality are required to fulfil this requirement.
