Program Overview

Program Description:

The goal of this program is to identify and develop a future generation of people who will lead health systems around the world. They will come together in Israel, learn together, develop life-long relationships with colleagues from around the world and then return home to promote best practices in health care and to work to develop the best health system for their own nation. At the completion of the program, students will have acquired new skills in leadership and new knowledge of health care delivery. Students will receive credits from either the University of Haifa or the University of Georgia, two internationally recognized universities, that may well be applied to their home universities. They will also receive a certificate of completion of the program. The Curriculum includes four different courses: Global Health Systems Designed for future leaders to have content knowledge: – provides future leaders with knowledge of international health systems that will give them a foundation of knowledge to improve health care in the future by improving health systems, understanding current best practices in health systems, and learning how to improve those systems that need improvement. Leadership in Public Health Health care leaders will join us – in person or by video – to discuss case studies of leadership in health care – both successful and failed examples. Students will learn about leadership principles and styles. They will study leaders and understand their strengths and weaknesses, learning how those strengths and weaknesses resulted in either successes or failures of their leadership. Global Perspectives on Health and Risk Communication Leaders who wish to change health behaviors on the global stage must understand both theory and practice of health and risk communication. This course examines how communication professionals bring health innovations and risk protection to diverse cultures and regions. It studies real cases of emergency and disaster communication, health promotion campaigns conducted via media as well as through interpersonal channels, and provider-patient interaction. Emphasis is on understanding the cultural values and communication styles of target audiences. Sociology of Health and Illness This course is designed to provide a broad overview of the field of medical sociology, and, to this end, we will address topics such as social, political, economic and cultural affects on health and illness; patterns in distribution of health and illness; health related stigma; social movements surrounding health; social meanings of health and illness; and how people seek help for and manage their health and illness. We will discuss different sociological theories and examine how these contribute to a better understanding of specific contemporary issues related to health and illness.
