Program Description:
In recent years, GIS has become a well established technology applied in many areas of government, industry and commerce. Examples of GIS applications include urban planning, emergency response systems, environmental monitoring, utilities maintenance and market analysis. The course concentrates on the use of Information Technology to help solve geographical problems and for communicating geographical information. It provides a theoretical background to GIS users, covers the necessary technical material for major aspects of GIS design and gives hands-on practical experience in the use of GIS tools. On successful completion you will be well equipped for a career in this rapidly expanding branch of IT. The course aims to produce professionals with the necessary GIS skills to enable them to appreciate the breadth of technical uses involved in the design of GIS and to control the design and implementation of a GIS within an organisation. The School of Computing has a strong international record in GIS and is actively involved in GIS research and consultancy.
