Program Overview

Program Description:
The mission of the School of Ecology is to advance ecological knowledge and understanding through a comprehensive search for principles and patterns regarding how organisms interact with each other and with their environment. We examine relationships between the structure and function of populations, communities, ecosystems and landscapes to resolve complex ecological challenges. We strive to teach diverse students to think critically, to improve their environmental literacy, and to develop essential skills for professional development. We collaborate with colleagues in related disciplines and with stakeholders to explore the social and natural science linkages necessary to address and solve complex problems. Synthesis and innovation are emphasized in our curriculum as we help to educate ourselves, our students, policy makers and the general public. Our students experience hands-on learning through research and outreach programs, and they thereby contribute solutions to a wide range of environmental issues. They provide our best demonstration of both effective teaching and learning that characterize our unique program.
