Program Description:

Our MSc Occupational Therapy helps you to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to enable you to work with clients of all ages who have physical or mental health problems or learning difficulties. We combine a number of learning styles, such as lectures, seminars, problem-based learning and workshops. Teaching and learning is undertaken both in our University and at work placements. Our MSc Occupational Therapy views the client as central to the therapeutic process, promoting health and well being through the use of occupation. The main teaching and learning method used is a hybrid, embedded problem-based learning approach (PBL) which is supported by key lectures and other group work. Our programme aims: 1. to develop you to graduate level with competencies which meet occupational standards and codes of practice; 2. to meet QAA academic and practitioner standards and benchmark statements for occupational therapy; 3. to fulfil COT curriculum framework guidelines; 4. to meet HPC standards of education and training; 5. to fulfil university generic learning outcomes; 6. to develop you as reflective and independent practitioners capable of operating in a multidisciplinary health care context; 7. to promote and develop evidence-based practice and research awareness; 8. to cultivate in you the capacity to integrate the theoretical principles and concepts of occupational therapy with practice in order to provide quality intervention for service users; and 9. to assist you to engage in the analysis of academic discourses in order to continually develop professional practice. We also educate pre-registration physiotherapists, nurses, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists and oral hygienists – to name a few – as well as providing on-going professional education for qualified health and social care staff. This means that you not only study alongside other health professionals learning with them, but you also get the opportunity to learn expert knowledge from them! All of our Masters level pre-registration programmes are offered as accelerated programmes. This means you have the advantage of interprofessional learning (IPL), encouraging professionals to learn with and from each other – an understanding that helps to ensure our students have the expertise to respond adequately and effectively to the complexity of their service user needs, and ensures that care is safe, seamless and of a high standard. Our School of Health and Human Sciences offers a multidisciplinary environment with an excellent reputation for research and teaching. We submitted with our Department of Sociology in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008) and were awarded joint first in the UK. Within our School, our educational provision meets professional regulatory requirements and achieves high standards. We do so by having staff that are multi-professional, including clinically-qualified lecturers, sociologists and social policy and management specialists, so they have clinical and academic credibility. A unique feature of our school is that many of our staff work with local National Health Service (NHS) Trusts and other local agencies, which enhances our grasp of the contemporary links between academic research, the major issues of the day and practice. We specialise in applied, multidisciplinary research that addresses issues of national and international concern to health policy and practice and related fields. We have research interest groups in ‘Developing Professional Practice’ and ‘Applied Health Research’, and host the NIHR Research Design Service for the East of England.
