Do you have high levels of proficiency in Chinese and English? Do you want to develop your skills to become a professional translator or interpreter? Building on our internationally-recognised expertise in English language and linguistics and the teaching of practical foreign language skills, our MA Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting offers written translation, oral interpreting and film and video subtitling in a single programme. Our course will sharpen your translation and interpreting skills, introduce you to industry-standard translation and interpreting software, and give you practical experience in using your skills and knowledge. If you have the appropriate qualifications you can take this course without completing the Postgraduate Diploma first (please see entry requirements). Our course is unique in the emphasis it places on hands-on training. You work with native speakers in developing your ability to move accurately and quickly between English and Chinese in a variety of contexts (business, legal and court, public sector, conference), using different interpreting modes (consecutive, liaison, simultaneous), and through different media (on-site, teleconferencing, telephone). You learn how to use your language skills to translate, interpret and subtitle effectively in a culturally sensitive way. Our brand new translation, interpreting and subtitling facilities are equipped with the latest industry-standard software that ensures you are working under the same conditions as professional translators and interpreters. By the end of your studies, you will have developed the practical language and key skills necessary for employment in professional translation, interpreting and subtitling. You will have the ability to translate and interpret quickly and accurately in unprepared contexts, the kind often encountered in professional translation and interpreting.
