Program Overview

Program Description:
This programme was one of the first of its kind in the UK and continues to provide outstanding professional training for those wishing to become chartered occupational psychologists, whilst retaining the academic rigours of a master’s degree. We have recently been reaccredited by the BPS until the next review in 2018. The BPS commended our programme for several aspects of good practice; staff are extremely accessible and are readily available to provide support, advice and guidance to students; the programme works hard to maintain an effective alumni network and the input of alumni to the programme provides students with valuable insights into the different applications of occupational psychology in practice; the practical focus of the programme, including internships and strong links with industry, is a distinctive feature, as is the way that this is woven through all aspects of the programme; the practical emphasis of the programme is well balanced with a focus on developing critical thinking in students, and students evidently value this; and the programme benefits from its location within a positive, supportive and forward-thinking School of Psychology, which provides a vibrant and exciting context for student learning, and offers clear strategic thinking. " Key Facts The School of Psychology is one of the largest providers of psychology education and training in the UK. When MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology students join UEL they are joining a community of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral occupational psychology students. Our MSc students consistently rate us highly in terms of their satisfaction with our teaching, guidance, support and accessibility. We are able to boast a large number of students who pass the programme with merit and distinction. We have a thriving alumni network and our past students have gone on to become leading practitioners in a whole host of organisations across the globe. We were the first university in the UK to develop a Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology and this programme has been running successfully for the past 15 years. We have recently redesigned this programme so that students who complete the Professional Doctorate will also be eligible for full membership of the BPS and HCPC. This new programme is due to be launched in September 2014. Why Choose Us? The Ocupational and Organisational Psychology MSc programme is taught by a core team of three Chartered Occupational Psychologists, who are active in the fields of consultancy, research and international collaborations. We also offer additional input, provided by in-house specialists in the fields of Coaching Psychology, Counselling & Psychotherapy, Positive Psychology, Vocational Psychology and Educational Psychology. We have excellent links with the profession and currently have seven internships each year to offer our students, along with a prize for the best dissertation. Four of these internships are in the NHS, working on special projects for the Head of Occupational Health for a large NHS Trust, and each lasts for three months. The fifth is a six-week internship with a global HR Services Group operating across the world and covering ?the whole of the employment lifecycle. This organisation also offers a £250 prize for the best dissertation each year. In addition to these opportunities, we also have internships with a training consultancy and a small occupational psychology practice. Alongside these opportunities, we bring our students together with the profession in other ways. All assessed coursework takes place in organisational settings, including one project with the Occupational Psychology Team of a major international bank. Quotes from students and alumni "As an experienced HR practitioner, it was important that the MSc Programme had a focus on the reality of practicing Occupational Psychology in the workforce. All of the lecturing staff provided lots of real world examples throughout all the modules, constantly using the language of the profession, something that has made my transition to evidence-based practice a lot easier." "The MSc at UEL has been a fantastic experience – the focus on real world work scenarios as well as research has equipped me with the confidence and skills to apply the knowledge I have learnt on the course to my own work." "Having spent 25 years working in organisations of all shapes and sizes, this course suddenly made sense of all my weird and wonderful experiences in the world of work. As someone making a career change into psychology, it has given me the knowledge and experience to go out there and be a confident practicing business psychologist."
