Program Description:

The Master of Science in Nursing with a major in Health Systems Management (HSM) prepares the advanced practice nurse to manage and lead the delivery of nursing and health care in multiple settings across the health care continuum. The program will assist nurses in developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to: •maintain and improve health care quality, •efficiency, •and access. It is designed to prepare nurse leaders who can address contemporary issues in the evolving health care environment. The goal of the HSM program is to: •prepare nurse managers to lead and implement change in a variety of settings and •prepare highly skilled nurse managers and leaders who are committed to providing high quality and cost effective primary care services to individuals, families, and communities. The program places emphasis on providing services to the medically under-served. **GRADUATE NURSING PROGRAM OBJECTIVES** Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing degree program achieve the following terminal objectives: 1. Synthesize theory and knowledge from nursing, related health disciplines, the liberal arts and sciences as a foundation for advanced practice and decision-making. 2. Integrate specialty standards of advanced practice nursing to deliver culturally competent, quality health care services to individuals, families, populations and systems. 3. Practice advanced nursing reflectively within moral, legal and humanistic framework with a commitment to social justice in an urban setting. 4. Demonstrate a commitment to social justice and advocacy for vulnerable populations in the delivery of advanced nursing practice services. 5. Exercise effective leadership, critical thinking and communication skills in the development and implementation of advanced nursing practice services. 6. Integrate professional nursing standards, values and accountability into role and self development as an advanced practice nurse. 7. Utilize intra and interdisciplinary collaboration to facilitate desired health outcomes for clients, populations and systems. 8. Utilize information technology and an evidence-based research approach development of nursing knowledge and design of health care services for clients, populations and systems. 9. Analyze the financial, sociopolitical and organizational forces of the health care environment that impact the advanced nursing practice role. The MSN degree with the HSM major requires 38 credit hours and completion of an internship. **Full-time and Part-time Options** The McAuley School of Nursing is committed to flexibility in the program and therefore offers both full-time and part-time options for degree completion. Full-time study can be completed in two years with some courses offered during the summer semester. The master of science degree is conferred at the completion of the program requirements. **Offered at two Locations** The program is offered at the University of Detroit Mercy McNichols Campus, as well as University Center at Macomb Community College in Clinton Township. Courses are web supported, and several courses are available via online delivery. **Certificate Options** In addition to the Health Systems Management degree program, several certificate options are available in HSM. The certificates require completion of 12 credits. Click a certificate below to download details. •Nursing Leadership and Financial Management Certificate •Outcomes Performance Management Certificate Those who have completed the certificate program or the HSM program are both eligible to sit for the certification examination in Nursing Administration administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Case Manager certification exam administered by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC).

Requirements:

(1) A baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program (2) A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (3) A minimum of 2000 hours as a registered nurse (4) A license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan (5) Three letters of professional recommendation with at least one from someone in supervisory capacity (6) An autobiographical statement of personal goals and objectives (7) An interview with graduate faculty **Attention FNP Applicants: All of the above application materials must be submitted by the February 15 deadline to be considered for regular admission to the program. ***Note: a GRE is required for any student petitioning for consideration for admission to the program with a cumulative GPA less than 3.0.

International Requirements:

All course work completed outside the U.S. and Canada must be formally evaluated by either the World Education Services or the Educational Credential Evaluators. A course-by-course/detailed evaluation report is required by the University of Detroit Mercy.
