Program Description:

The McAuley School of Nursing (MSON) which is housed in the College of Health Professions (CHP) was established in 1990 with the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit. The CHP and MSON seeks to be recognized as an Urban Center of academic excellence, distinguished by community partnerships and graduates who lead, serve and promote social justice and health. The mission of the McAuley School of Nursing (MSON) is to prepare skilled baccalaureate and master’s level nurses who are committed to lead and to provide high quality, cost- effective and culturally competent health care services to individuals, families, and communities. Because of the community of scholars housed within the College, the concentration of resources it brings to each program, the diverse student body it attracts, and its interdisciplinary teaching methods, the CHP is a university model for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a major in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program is designed for registered nurses who hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing who want to further their skills and knowledge in relation to advanced nursing practice. The MSON graduate programs are designed to meet the needs of working professionals with opportunities for full-time and part-time study. Courses are offered in a variety of formats including traditional classroom, on line, and web-enhanced hybrid formats and close faculty-student contact is maintained to assist students in achieving professional goals. The MSN FNP prepares highly skilled and culturally sensitive advance practice nurses who are committed to provide quality and cost-effective primary care services to individuals, families and communities. Besides primary care services, critical foci include practice models with emphasize the family as unit, health promotion and disease prevention and interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of the program and those who complete the post master’s certificate are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Students are urged to contact the specific Board of Nursing in the state in which they intend to practice in order to ensure they are in full compliance with the education, practice and certification requirements. Graduates of the family nurse practitioner program are highly sought after and work in a variety of practice environments including, family practice, internal medicine, oncology, school-based health, emergency medicine and many other specialty practices.

Requirements:

(1) A baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program. (2) A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. (3) A minimum of 2000 hours of experience as a registered nurse. (4) A license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan. (5) Three letters of professional recommendation with at least one from someone in supervisory capacity. (6) An autobiographical statement of personal goals and objectives. (7) An interview with graduate faculty. Admission to the Family Nurse Practitioner program is highly competitive and admission is limited. Those interested in admission to the family nurse practitioner program should apply early (preferably by March 1 for a fall admission date); applications are not reviewed until complete.

International Requirements:

All course work completed outside the U.S. and Canada must be formally evaluated by either the World Education Services or the Educational Credential Evaluators. A course-by-course/detailed evaluation report is required by the University of Detroit Mercy.
