Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The Department of Biological Sciences offers the Ph.D. degree and the M.S. Degree in Biology. Our department has seventeen tenure track faculty whose research interests fall into the following areas: cell biology, molecular biology, neurobiology, biophysics, molecular evolution, conservation genetics, and ecology/conservation biology. With facilities located in the Seeley G. Mudd Building, Boettcher West, and the DU High Altitude Field Station, the department can provide students with a stimulating environment to pursue a postgraduate degree. In recent years the department has obtained the following equipment to enhance our research capabilities: DNA sequencer, ABI Real-time PCR, MALDI-TOF mass spec, several fluorescent microscopes, and an Olympus confocal microscope. In general the MS program is a two year experience (45 credits), and the Ph.D. program is a four to six year experiments (90 credits). Both degrees require a minimum of 18 credits of course work; however, the emphasis in our program is on research and most of the degree is in research credits. All students are expected to present and defend an original research thesis. Students may apply for graduate teaching assistantships. In addition to a 9-month stipend and tuition waivers, full time GTAs also receive health insurance benefits. In addition, students may be supported as graduate research assistants through individual faculty member's grants.
