Program Overview

Program Description:
The graduate studies program in the Department of Mathematics emphasizes strong interaction with faculty in order to gain maximum benefit from coursework. First, the program allows students to explore new mathematical understanding in both personal and social contexts. Second, it immerses students deeply in exploration, inquiry, and analysis. Finally, the program familiarizes students with the ever-changing body of research literature related to learning and teaching mathematics and contemporary research methodologies. The cumulative experiences of our mathematics program prepare graduates to enter top mathematics education programs, to take on important leadership roles in mathematics education communities, and to enter classrooms better equipped to teach lessons that encourage deeper mathematical thinking. We have two dozen faculty members whose research covers a broad range of specialties, including algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, mathematical physics and combinatorics. In addition to our regular graduate classes we have weekly seminars on research topics including-Combinatorial Number Theory, Commutative Algebra, Differential Geometry, Functional Analysis, Game Theory, Lie Theory, Mathematical Physics and Dynamical Systems, Quantum Gravity, Representations in Geometry, and Topology.

Accreditation:
The UCR campus has been accredited since 1956; reaccreditation of the campus by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) occurs approximately every ten years. UCR was most recently reaccredited on March 3, 2010. UCR's next proposal for reaccreditation is due to be submitted to WASC in fall 2016.
