Program Overview

Program Description:

The ecosystem-based management paradigm has been introduced to meet new challenges in marine resource management but there is not yet a universal consensus on how it can best be applied. This one-year programme will equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to meet this challenge and find new solutions to manage our marine natural resources. This interdisciplinary course offers a unique curriculum allowing you to gain both theoretical and practical experience.

The course places an emphasis on equally developing your biological and quantitative toolkits. Understand biological and ecological processes, learn new analytical techniques, and understand how to apply those to manage natural resources. The year is composed of a series of three-week modules including both compulsory (e.g., fisheries ecology, ecosystem biology) and elective (e.g., ecological economics, aquaculture, marine top predator ecology) courses. Visit our website for more details.

Both University academic staff and professional practitioners teach on this programme. A strong component of the course involves direct interactions with staff from the Fisheries Research Services Marine laboratory. Other agencies represented include the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Scottish Natural Heritage.
Student debates are an integral part of coursework enhancing communication and teamwork skills and allowing students to explore the issues surrounding Ecosystem-based Management.

We have world-class facilities to support field research in marine ecology including several field stations (http://oceanlab.abdn.ac.uk, http://www.abdn.ac.uk/lighthouse) and research can be carried out in partnership with professional agencies such as the FRS Marine Laboratory.

International Requirements:
An Honours Degree (at least Lower Second) or equivalent qualification in a biological discipline. Candidates with Honours Degrees in other subject areas (e.g. Oceanography, Mathematics, Geography, Economics) will be considered if they can show supporting qualifications or aptitude at a sufficiently advanced level in a biological subject.
