Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The MSc in Advanced Information Systems prepares students for careers in advanced information system design, technology management and commercial and academic research. It provides in-depth knowledge and skills of leading edge techniques, such as user modelling, information filtering, personalisation, adaptive hypermedia, data mining and visualisation, and natural language processing. The programme gives students the flexibility to specialise in their chosen area through a long project. In addition, it teaches business skills, for example through a group project where they develop a business idea and prototype to showcase to business representatives at a "Dragon's Den". The programme places particular emphasis on fostering students' abilities to apply techniques in real world scenarios. The programme is designed to meet the national need for skilled, business aware information technologists who know how to make use of advanced information system techniques. The IT industry has identified a critical shortage of specialists who are familiar not only with existing technologies, but also the leading edge. Compared to our MSc in Advanced Computer Science, this programme places less emphasis on hard-core programming and more on design and web application development. The programme covers state-of-the-art technologies which are in use in modern commercial applications, looking beyond the immediate horizon to new developments and next-generation techniques. In doing this, we draw upon our research strengths in areas such as user modelling, adaptive hypermedia, data interpretation and visualisation, data mining, intelligent user interfaces, electronic marketplaces and knowledge asset management.
