Program Description:
English education is concerned with the teaching of literature and composition in secondary schools and colleges and universities. Programs take a broad humanistic approach and emphasize research and practice in language, writing, and response to literature. Students study theory, research, and practice. Graduate students tutor and conduct research in local schools and are encouraged to publish their work and present papers at local, state, and national conferences. Students who have initial certification at the adolescence level can elect for an Ed.M., which qualifies them for professional certification at the middle child and adolescent levels. Certification titles include:
  • Initial Certification (Certificate of Advanced Study; Grades 7-12): This program will prepare students for New York State Initial Certification.
  • Initial/Professional (Initial Certification combined with a Master's degree; Grades 5-12): This includes preparation for Initial Certification, and a MasterÆs degree.
  • Professional (MasterÆs degree; Grades 7-12 or Grades 5-12): This degree in combination with other New York State requirements will help teachers obtain professional certification.
