Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The English department at the University at Buffalo has a history of maintaining one of the most open, flexible, and innovative M.A. and Ph.D programs in the country. The program is marked by variety and freedom, in which there are no mandated courses, no large lectures, and no language requirement. There is an eight- to ten-seminar requirement in which the student may pick and choose courses from a wide range of offerings in American and British literature, film, psychoanalytic psychology, philosophy, poetry, poetics, folklore, myth, and critical theory. For the Ph.D., in place of the language requirement an interdisciplinary minor field is required, the intent of which is to encourage study in a field or discipline outside of, yet related to, literary studies. In this program, students have an unparalleled freedom to design and pursue their own courses of study by mixing and matching classes from both within and without the English department.
