Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Ideal for students who have taken some Spanish in college, UAlbany’s program at the beautiful International Institute in Madrid features fascinating courses in Spanish language, literature, art, cinema, history, and culture that are designed for students with advanced but not fluent Spanish. Host families are arranged to provide maximum immersion into the Spanish language and culture. Excursions to sites of cultural and historical interest are offered as an integral part of the academic program.
This program features a selection of upper division undergraduate courses in Spanish language, literature, art, cinema, history, and social sciences. Courses are taught in Spanish by Spanish professors, however full fluency in Spanish is not required. Classes are small, encouraging open discussion and providing ample opportunities for individual attention. You must have an intermediate or advanced level of Spanish language skills in order to participate in this program; at least one Spanish course above the intermediate level is recommended. Students with sufficient language skills may be able to enroll in an independent study course in conjunction with a local university in Madrid. Please see our website for more details.

- Setting Description:
- Participants are given the opportunity to live with host families and to experience Spanish culture first-hand. This is the perfect way to learn about Spanish families, customs, and cuisine. It is also a great way to practice and improve your Spanish skills. The host families provide a room and three meals a day, along with a variety of other services, including laundry. The Program Assistant in Madrid makes all the arrangements for your homestay. Students also have the option of making their own housing arrangements in local apartments in Madrid. UAlbany can help by explaining the general process, but we are not able to get involved in the search, rental decision, or contract process for the accommodations. You are fully responsible for making the final arrangements if you choose to find your own housing rather than live with a pre-arranged host family. Please see our website for more details.
