Program Overview

Program Description:
The MSc programme in Environmental Sciences is one of the five MSc track in Chemistry offered by the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The Netherlands is known for its pioneering role in environmental sciences, environmental risk assessment and sustainability concepts. In the field of environmental chemistry, specific analytical methods are used to measure the concentration of contaminants in biotic and/or abiotic environments and to determine e.g. their degradation rate and partition processes. Reactions and partition processes in both biotic and abiotic matrices that are relevant for terrestrial and aquatic systems, are involved in the determination of concentrations of contaminants; industrial processes which can lead to emissions to surface waters, sorption to sediment macromolecules, tritrophic interactions between plants and insects, hydrolysis in surface waters, degradation by microorganisms, or metabolism in higher organisms. The MSc in Environmental Sciences is coordinated by the research Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED).
