Program Overview

Program Description:
The Bioethics Program: Masters of Science in Bioethics is offered jointly by Union Graduate College and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Bioethics Program provides competency- and skills-based education in clinical ethics, research ethics and bioethics policy This multidisciplinary graduate program designed to enhance the career and educational opportunities of those interested in such issues as end-of-life care and physician aid-in-dying, animal and human subjects research, or public health campaigns to combat obesity and smoking. Students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are MDs, JDs, RNs, and PhDs currently working in health care, research, and policy. Others are post-Baccalaureate students who want to expand their understanding of bioethics and improve their prospects for admission to professional degree programs. The majority of courses are online. They are taught using the latest in web-based technologies. They provide students the flexibility to take courses while meeting personal and professional obligations. Onsite courses provide students with intensive hands-on training in the skills and competencies required of professional bioethicists. Some skills simply cannot be taught online, but through the use of supervised exercises and innovative real-world simulations students can learn and practice analytic, communication, mediation and moral reasoning skills. Courses are taught by internationally renowned faculty, including some of the founders of the field of bioethics.
