Program Overview
- Program Description:
Our Master of Literacy program is designed to equip experienced teachers with the tools and knowledge they need to develop and improve literacy skills in students of all backgrounds.
The 36-credit program is academically intensive and interdisciplinary, and includes 6 hours of fieldwork experience so you can put your learning to practice in real classrooms.
What You’ll Learn
Our courses cover the basics of reading instruction and child development in cultural context. You’ll learn to identify the early indicators of reading and writing disabilities and develop the skills and strategies to tailor instruction so the student can learn to decode and comprehend the material, at their individual level. At the same time, you will explore the socio-cultural factors that affect student learning. You’ll learn how to work individually with students, either reaching into or pulling out of the class, and how to work with teachers on staff development, all while becoming a better teacher yourself, gaining competency in dealing with struggling students.
The program fulfills the academic requirements for New York State Certification in both Birth-Grade 6 and Grades 5-12. Upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for NYS-certification in teaching literacy.
