Program Overview

Program Description:

Our 60-credit MS program in School Counseling, with an option for simultaneous bilingual certification, is specifically designed to help those who are eager to make a difference in the lives of students prepare to become guidance counselors, and provide academic and emotional support to children and families in culturally diverse K-12 settings.

Our goal is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the issues many schools, children, and families face in an increasingly complex educational environment. Courses cover a wide range of relevant topics, from counseling families of exceptional children and child development to understanding high-risk behavior and community relations.

We view school counseling and educational intervention as valuable tools in nurturing the academic, social, emotional, and future well-being of all children.

Course of Study

Most students take three years to complete the curriculum, which includes a 600-hour internship in the final year. We offer courses on weekday evenings and during the day on Sundays.

To meet the high demand in New York for bilingual certified school counselors, we're working with GSE's Bilingual Pupil Personnel Services certification program to allow interested bilingual student to graduate with an MS in School Counseling and bilingual extension in pupil personnel services. You'll need to take six additional credits (two courses) and pass the bilingual education assessment.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the 60-credit program, students will be eligible to apply for provisional New York State certification as a School Counselor. Permanent certification requires two years of post-Master’s experience in a school setting.

Students who wish to engage in the practice of School Counseling outside of New York State should familiarize themselves with the requirements of those venues.
