- Study the development of church and state theory, especially among the early church fathers, the Medieval period, and the Reformation, in Western civilization.
We will discuss the evolution of Roman Catholic thought on liberal democracy in the 19th century as well as contemporary issues facing the Vatican in an era of religious pluralism and globalization. Excursions will include sites focusing on the ruins and fall of Rome (Pompeii), time in the Vatican, Museums and churches focusing on ancient Rome, the early church (e.g., Augustine), Medieval period (e.g., Aquinas) and significant Popes in church/state matters; the Italian sect called the Waldensians, Renaissance and Reformation (Council of Trent; Pietro Vermigli and the Italian Reformation; Machiavelli).
