Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Vienna: City of Music, 1781-1827
When Mozart arrived in Vienna in 1781, he found a world rich in musical possibilities. The capital of the Holy Roman Empire, under the enlightened rule of Joseph II, fostered a vibrant artistic culture in which composers were able to create some of the enduring masterpieces of Western music. Upon Mozart’s arrival, he befriended Joseph Haydn, who himself was the most celebrated composer of the day. A decade later, Mozart’s life was cut tragically short; and a relative musical unknown moved to Vienna “to receive the spirit of Mozart from Haydn’s hands”—Ludwig van Beethoven. The works of this great Classical triumvirate have been a cornerstone of music history ever since.
The three-week music course shall introduce students to the history and culture of one of the world’s great musical cities. Through regular excursions to local cultural venues and daily class discussions, students will gain insight into the music, working environment, and legacy of the First Viennese School. We will follow in the footsteps of the masters, visiting their homes, their churches, significant concert halls, and ultimately, their final resting places. Students will experience first-hand the more human side of the humanities while studying music history from inside the world of its creators. Students may apply for German credit which is taught at ActiLingua. A modern school with 6 bright, welcoming, tastefully furnished classrooms in a typically Viennese Jugendstil building.
