Program Overview
- Program Description:
The Master’s Degree program in Art Business offered on our Los Angeles campus uniquely combines core courses from Claremont Graduate University’s Drucker School of Management with staples such as Art Law, International Art Markets, and Professional Practice from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. The degree is granted by Claremont Graduate University (CGU) in partnership with Sotheby’s Institute. To tailor the general Art Business degree, students may choose concentrations in one of three areas: East Asian Art, Latin American Art, or Contemporary Art, or they may select from a range of electives offered by both the Institute and CGU.
CONCENTRATIONS
THE BUSINESS OF ART
This is the broadest-reaching art business curriculum. In addition to the core courses in management and art business it includes sixteen units of electives drawn from the full array of courses offered at CGU and, in certain cases, from upper level seminars offered by the five Claremont Colleges. The General Business curriculum prepares students for entry into a broad range of art world careers, from auction houses to art fairs, galleries, corporate collecting, museum management, art-based start-ups and more.
EAST ASIAN ART AND ITS MARKETS
Students with a dedicated interest in East Asian art and its markets may elect this concentration, which begins with the dual core, noted above. It then follows a curriculum that prepares students for careers in and across the art markets of China, Japan, Korea and other East Asian countries. Students have the opportunity to travel in the region, which can be paired with full-immersion language study, internships with East Asia-based art businesses and organizations, or both.
CONTEMPORARY ART AND ITS MARKETS
Students with an exclusive interest in contemporary art may choose this concentration, which includes the dual core, a year-long survey of contemporary art’s recent history and specialized courses in contemporary art theory and communications – from press releases and reviews to artist’s statements and catalogue essays. The contemporary art concentration prepares students for careers at the cutting edge of the international contemporary art world.
LATIN AMERICAN ART
Los Angeles is a major hub for Latin American art, artists, collections, and culture. Students with an interest in the arts of Mexico as well as the growing national centers of Central and South America may elect this concentration, which focuses on the history, markets, and cultural policies of the region. The Latin American Art concentration prepares students for careers that span the Americas, an increasingly important axis of commercial and cultural activity.
